Amid growing community concerns over anti-social behaviour in Hartlepool’s Ward Jackson Park, Councillor Mike Young, Leader of the Opposition and Rural West Ward representative, and Councillor Rob Darby, Police and Crime Panelist, have jointly called for immediate intervention. Both councillors have contacted Matthew Storey, Cleveland Police and Crime Commissioner, requesting a meeting with residents and law enforcement to address the recurring issues.
Incidents of vandalism, verbal abuse, and destruction of park property have left residents fearful. Speaking on the matter, Cllr. Young expressed, “This park has served our community for generations, but the ongoing anti-social behaviour is ruining it for local families. The time has come for Cleveland Police to take decisive action to restore peace in this much-loved space.”
Cllr. Darby, with his role on the Police and Crime Panel, echoed these concerns: “As a member of the Police and Crime Panel, I’ve seen the wide-reaching impact of anti-social behaviour. We need to act swiftly, bringing residents and police together to ensure this park remains a safe space for everyone.”
The councillors have emphasised the need for coordinated support from Cleveland Police, calling for additional patrols, community engagement, and a review of recent reports through the COPA app and other channels. They are hopeful that with the full backing of the Police Commissioner’s office, the park can once again become a haven for local families and will express their views at the Poilice and Crime Panel on Tuesday 17 September 2024, where Mike will reshare his letter with the PCC relating to the specific matter.
