Cleveland Police and Crime Panel Meeting

At the Police and Crime Panel tonight, Councillor Mike Young was able to commend Cleveland Police Chief Constable - Mark Webster on the operational work of containment and effectively bringing confidence back to the community given their responsive action during the unrest in July 2024. Councillor Young did also highlight however that there is a solid requirement to find out why people are feeling so disenfranchised and disaffected leading to the recent issues. We must deal with the matter carefully and respectfully on all sides as that is the only way we reach community cohesion.

At the same meeting, Councillor Young referred to the resourcing matters leading to some wards in the town receiving lower or no community policing - or visits by PCSOs and refer to my recent letter to him about then need for Ward Jackson Park to be highlighted as a place for attention due to years of anti-social behaviour. The PCC Matthew Storey was able to say that he will be ensuring that this is fed into the operational Police force and he has assured Councillor Young that a letter will be sent stating that a walk-around will be arranged with him, the Chair of Neighbourhood Services - Councillor Karen Oliver, residents and the Police to look to deal with this in a long-term way that solves the problem long-term.

Matthew also said that a recruitment drive will be happening early in 2025 for new PCSOs across Cleveland.
